"We are excited about our new program addition and pleased to be able to announce the hiring of Melvin Crow," said Kling. "Coach Crow is very well known in the Northwest Kansas region and is a great addition to the Maverick family. I’m looking forward to watching this program develop and grow under his leadership."
Melvin Crow has served as a professional hunting guide for the past 20 years. In that time, he has won 8 National Field Trial Championships with numerous runner-up acknowledgments. Crow has also served as the shooting instructor for the Sherman County 4H Club for the past decade.
“I’ve been training for many years to further both my own skill as a competitor and a coach, as well as working with youth organizations”, said Crow, “I’m very excited for this year and what it will bring. I think we are going to make a big impression in the collegiate shooting community.”
In recent years, intercollegiate shooting sports have been gaining popularity. Nearly 300 colleges and universities in the U.S. now offer shooting sport programs. Northwest Tech provides a safe opportunity for students to participate responsibly in shooting sports. The Shooting Sports team is comprised of students interested in recreational shooting as well as competition. Coach Crow is dedicated to educating his team on proper handling, care and use of a firearm, in addition to exposing participants to the shooting sports community.
“With the expansion of shooting sports programs in high schools all around our area, we are positioning the college to meet the need and interests of the students in our own back yard,” said Northwest Tech President Ben Schears. “We have no doubt Mr. Crow’s experience will get us on the right path to starting a strong and successful program.”
